Perth nurse makes a difference in Cambodia.

Perth nurse makes a difference in Cambodia.

In September 2014 Perth Nurse Gina Storey volunteered to travel to Cambodia to Kratie Province to work with the organisation Cambodia Vision. Cambodia Vision works in small provincial towns in Cambodia, focusing on blindness prevention and basic medical healthcare, whilst training local medical students.

The Eye Surgery Foundation supported Gina’s trip by donating Anaesthetic drugs and funding her expenses. The Eye Surgery Foundation is unique in that they are not only a first class Ophthalmic Day Hospital but being owned by a charitable organisation, a percentage of their profits are distributed to Ophthalmic related charities, education and research. They believe a greater gain is achieved by working collaboratively with other like-minded organisations such as Cambodia Vision to collectively make a difference.

Gina joined a team of dedicated health professionals from across Australia including ophthalmologists, anaesthetists, nurses, general practitioners, pharmacists, optical technicians and optometrists. They were assisted by local medical students and volunteers.

Throughout their 14 days this amazing team of people achieved an enormous amount. They:

  1. Operated on 433 cases of cataract (including two HIV-positive patients and one active malaria sufferer)

  2. Provided 247 glasses (Glasses that were specifically cut to a prescription)

  3. Provided 1,703 reading glasses

  4. Provided over 2,000 sunglasses

  5. Provided 250 hearing aids

  6. Gave away boxes of children’s toys

  7. Donated 20 hospital beds to Kratie and Sihanouk Hospital Centre of Hope

  8. Provided training to 28 medical students from Phnom Penh and Kratie

  9. Donated general medication to Kratie Referral Hospital

  10. Gave away almost three pallets of vitamins and supplements to patients (no one left the hospital empty handed).

The Eye Surgery Foundation congratulates Gina and the team for all that they have achieved. They have truly made a difference.
