Dr Ian Chan has been performing complex eye surgery at PEH since 2009. The accomplished Ophthalmologist has an interest in refractive surgery including cornea surgery, laser vision correction and lens implant surgery.
He received a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery from UWA and completed specialist training in Perth with the award of Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. Dual fellowship-training in cornea, cataract and laser refractive surgery followed at the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital.
The principal surgeon at Aculase Laser Eye Centre says he loves that Ophthalmologists have the ability to “change so many people’s lives so quickly with our hands”. He was the first surgeon in Perth to perform SMILE in 2015 and is particularly interested in abnormal cases.
“I sub-specialise in some complex cornea and lens cases,” he says. “Solving these problems for my colleagues, using advanced surgical techniques, brings another level of satisfaction.”
Dr Chan regularly speaks about laser eye and cornea surgery at national and international conferences. He also invented a surgery technique and instrument, the Chan SMILE dissecting forceps, now used by surgeons around the world.
